Seiryu 通天閣 Overview
You know what struck me first about Seiryu ? The name itself – it’s got this poetic ring to it, but honestly, when you’re standing in Shinsekai looking up at the actual Tsutenkaku Tower looming right there, you realize they weren’t being subtle about the location. I mean, the hotel is literally named after the tower that’s practically casting a shadow on the building.
The thing is, most people write off this area as touristy or rough around the edges, but staying here actually gives you this incredible front-row seat to one of Osaka’s most authentic neighborhoods. Sure, Shinsekai can feel a bit gritty – especially at night when the neon signs are buzzing and you’ve got salarymen stumbling between kushikatsu joints – but that’s exactly what makes it fascinating. From your room (and I’d definitely request one facing the tower if you can), you’re watching this whole theater of Osaka life unfold below. The morning crowd heading to work, the afternoon pachinko parlor regulars, the evening food crawlers… it’s like having a documentary playing outside your window.
What I really appreciated was how the hotel manages to feel modern and clean without trying to pretend it’s in some fancy district. The staff clearly knows their clientele – they’re dealing with everyone from curious backpackers to business travelers who actually understand that staying here puts you walking distance from Tennoji Station and the JR lines. Check-in was smooth, no pretentious lobby ceremony, just efficient and friendly. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – nothing groundbreaking, but everything works and it’s quieter than you’d think given the location. Actually, the sound insulation surprised me because Shinsekai can get pretty lively, especially on weekends when people are bar-hopping along Janjan Yokocho.
Here’s something nobody tells you: the breakfast crowd at the nearby kissaten (old-school coffee shops) is incredible people-watching, and you’re literally a two-minute walk from some of the best ones. Plus – and this is key – you can walk to Sumiyoshi Taisha if you’re into shrine visits, or catch the train to literally anywhere in Kansai without dealing with the chaos of staying in Namba or Umeda. The whole area smells like fried food and has this slightly nostalgic, Showa-era vibe that feels more authentic than the polished tourist zones. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for luxury or quiet nights, but if you want to stay somewhere that feels like actual Osaka – with all the character and slight chaos that comes with it – this place gets it right. The 8.4 rating makes sense; it’s not trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Belinda from Australia – 3 February 2025 (8/10)
It’s close proximity to trains and food.
What could be improved: It was a little too small for 3 adults.Juliana from Indonesia – 6 January 2025 (9/10)
Access near to train station, facilities like an apartment, with microwave and small kitchen. Easy to check in and check out, using apps. Walking distance to Osaka Tower amd Shinsekai.
What could be improved: Because we book a 3 people room, they use a sofa bed, but the sofa bed is not comfortable for sleeping nor making the room so crowded.Alec from Australia – 30 December 2024 (9/10)
Clean and comfortable. Good size rooms and very handy to nightlife, restaurants and tourist points of interest.

I liked how it was close to the metro station, and with a 20-minute walk, you were at one of the main food markets.
Rufino from United States – 2 November 2024 (9/10)
Being very close to some of the sightseeing places, it was very peaceful and clean. Just on the other side you’ll find good restaurants, no problem in getting around.
What could be improved: The beds were super comfy but as a big guy just a bit longer, but they were good in comfort.Sergei from Russia – 12 October 2024 (9/10)
Great apartment hotel on a quiet street, which is a plus considering the bustling Osaka area. We arrived late at night and the remote check-in was very easy and straightforward – we entered the hotel with a code and took the keys from a box, which was very convenient. The rooms are spacious, and they all seem to have a balcony (maybe except the first floor) with a nice view. There is a kitchen in the room just in case, but there are many local restaurants nearby, and the Sinsekai area, so you won't need one. There is also a subway and JR station nearby – easy access to anywhere in the city. Overall, this is a great choice, I recommend it.
What could be improved: There are no disadvantagesCanto from Mexico – 9 October 2024 (9/10)
