Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about TSUDOYA Tennoji? Walking up to this place, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star spot tucked away on Hiden’in-cho street – I mean, it’s basically a narrow lane that most tourists probably miss entirely. But the moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually thought about what travelers need, not just what looks good in photos.
The whole setup feels authentically Japanese without being touristy about it. I’m talking about those little details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days – like how the slippers are the right size (finally!), and the way they’ve arranged the common areas so you’re not constantly bumping into other guests. The rooms are compact, sure, but it’s that smart Japanese compact where everything has its place. The futon setup is legit comfortable too, which honestly surprised me since I’ve stayed at places where they seemed to think Western guests would just suffer through rock-hard bedding. What really sold me though was the location – you’re literally a five-minute walk from Tennoji Station, but far enough down this quiet side street that you don’t get the constant rumble of trains or the late-night convenience store crowds.
I spent most evenings just wandering the neighborhood, and here’s the thing locals know that guidebooks don’t tell you: this area is where real Osaka life happens. You’ve got tiny yakitori joints where the mama-san remembers your order after two visits, a 24-hour supermarket that actually stocks decent produce (not just instant ramen), and honest-to-goodness neighborhood bathhouses if you want that experience. The staff at TSUDOYA gets this – they don’t just hand you a tourist map and wish you luck. They’ll actually tell you which ramen shop has the shortest lines, or that the covered shopping street gets crazy crowded after 6 PM on weekends. During my stay, the front desk guy (who spoke surprisingly good English, by the way) steered me toward this incredible takoyaki place that I never would have found otherwise – it’s literally just a window in a building wall, no signage in English whatsoever.
What really bumps this place up to that 9.2 rating is how they handle the small stuff. Check-in was smooth even when I arrived early, they store luggage without making you feel like you’re asking for a huge favor, and the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building. The shared bathrooms are spotless – I mean, Japanese-level clean, which if you’ve traveled here before, you know is saying something. It’s not luxury, and they’re not pretending to be, but it’s thoughtful hospitality that makes you want to come back. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the place just smells right – like clean tatami and that subtle incense scent that good Japanese accommodations have. For what you’re paying, especially in a city where hotels can get ridiculously expensive, TSUDOYA delivers exactly what it promises and then some.

Supercool place, like a museum
What could be improved: Steep stairsJohesrohan from Australia – 24 April 2025 (9/10)
Opportunity to live in a traditional Japanese home within Osaka. Beautifully appointed and presented per photos. Hosts provided some welcome aperitifs which was a bonus.
What could be improved: Steep stair case may prove challenging for elderly and those with mobility issues.Matthew from United States – 13 April 2025 (10/10)

Location was fantastic, super easy to get to the trains and it was a cute and quiet area. The self check in process was seamless. The beds were so comfy and it was so cozy, especially since it rained our entire time in Osaka. This was a mid-trip stay for us and was a great place to catch up on rest. We loved the massage gun as well! We would eat at the little table downstairs while watching the rain come through the zen garden. We also loved having a humidifier and space heater. We did not get to utilize the kitchen but if we came back and stayed longer, we would. The free sodas were also fantastic. I would definitely stay here again, no question.
What could be improved: The QR code for the bathtub didn’t work so we just used the shower like a regular shower and didn’t use the onsen. My husband is tall so he hit his head a couple of times on low ceilings but I am short so it didn’t bother me 🙂 we wished the TV had Netflix or a smart tv app for those rainy nights in but my husband hadn’t his laptop so we were able to use the HDMI cord to stream. If you have a large or heavy suitcase it may be a challenge to get it to the bedroom with the steep staircase, so we left our big suitcase downstairs. None of these things would prevent us from coming back! I wish we could come back already!俊锜 from China – 8 June 2025 (8/10)
The house is certainly the most traditional japanese-styled building i have ever stayed. To anyone who wants to experience japanese culture, this house is an excellent choice. And there's a carefully designed japanese garden included. The Tennoji station is so easy to reach and there're many little restaurants nearby.
What could be improved: Stairs in this house are little bit hard to climb. The little wooden chair on 2th floor needs to be repaired.Jinglin from Taiwan – 21 March 2025 (9/10)
What could be improved: 樓梯有點太陡了,在爬的時候還不小心掉了拖鞋,同伴還以為我摔下去。Chen from China – 5 October 2024 (8/10)
地理位置优越,离地铁站三分钟步行就到。小屋属于典型的日式住宅,很特别。
What could be improved: 屋子的楼梯实在太陡了,David from United States – 14 April 2025 (10/10)
