Honestly, when I first walked up to the Toyoko Inn in Abeno, I wasn’t expecting much – it’s tucked into this sort of busy commercial area near Tennoji Station, and from the outside it looks like, well, exactly what it is: a no-frills business hotel. But you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you need in Osaka, especially when you’re this close to everything that matters.

The thing about this particular Toyoko Inn is the location – and I mean the real location, not just “convenient to transportation” nonsense. You’re literally a few minutes’ walk from Tennoji Station, which connects you to the JR loop line, the subway, and those airport express trains. But more importantly, you’re in this interesting pocket where old-school Osaka meets the newer developments around Abeno Harukas (that massive skyscraper you can probably see from your room if you’re on a higher floor). I actually ended up walking to Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku Tower one evening – it’s closer than you’d think, maybe 10 minutes through some surprisingly quiet residential streets once you get away from the main roads. The morning sounds are pretty typical for this part of the city – some traffic, the occasional train announcement echoing from the station, nothing too jarring if you’re used to urban noise.

What struck me about staying here was how the staff seemed genuinely used to international guests, which isn’t always a given with the Toyoko Inn chain. Check-in was smooth, they had English signage where it mattered, and the front desk actually knew about things like where to find coin laundry (there’s one in the building) and decent late-night food options nearby. The rooms are small – I mean, this is Japan, so you knew that already – but they’re efficiently designed in that way Japanese business hotels have perfected. The bed was firmer than most Western hotels but comfortable enough, and the bathroom, while tiny, had surprisingly good water pressure. There’s free WiFi that actually works, and they do that thing where they give you new pajamas and toiletries daily if you want them. The breakfast situation is pretty standard Toyoko Inn fare – rice, miso soup, some pickles, coffee that does the job. Nothing fancy, but it’s included and it’ll fuel you up for a day of wandering around Osaka. I’d probably stay here again, honestly – not because it’s amazing, but because it handles the basics well and puts you right where you want to be without costing a fortune. Sometimes that’s worth more than fancy amenities you won’t use anyway.

  Overall great stay and the staff were friendly and professional. I liked the fact there were lockers to leave your luggage before check-in time. My room was decent and had all that I needed – no complaints.

  It’s very affordable and in a good location. Close to subway and Bus stop to Itami airport bus stop. There are convenient stores and Donki within a short walk. The room is small but well designed.

  What could be improved: 1) Staff hardly speaks any English (even with translators nowadays). Also, when announcements were done, it was Japanese and Chinese only. After calling several times to inquire why we were woken up at 7.30 am, they finally made announcements in English. Not a good feeling to be in the unknown for 2 hours – especially in a country known for earthquakes.
  
  2) There is a weird and pointless rule to change rooms if you stay longer than 7 days. When asked why, you just get a response – this is our policy. But nobody cares about inconvenience to the client. I stayed 4 weeks and had to escalate to Booking.com for the hotel to let me stay in the same room.
  
  3) If you dont want cleaning on a certain day, they simply push it to next day by default without asking if you require it (rule is every 4th day). So it is always a discussion and a phone call at 10 am to check, if you left the room (here again language issues). So when you stay longer, could be a bit annoying
