You know what caught me off guard about Teradaya? The name makes it sound like some traditional ryokan tucked away in Kyoto, but this place is actually a modern apartment-style stay in Ikuno-ku – and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it brilliant. I mean, sure, it’s on the fourth floor of what looks like a pretty standard building from the outside, but once you get up there, you’ve got this massive 150 square meter space that genuinely feels like borrowing a friend’s really nice apartment for the week.

The Ikuno area isn’t where most tourists end up, which is sort of the point. You’re staying in an actual neighborhood where people live and work, not some hotel district. There’s this great Korean BBQ place just down the street – the area has a strong Korean community, actually – and the convenience stores stock different snacks than you’ll find in Dotonbori. Getting into central Osaka is easy enough; you’re looking at maybe 20 minutes to reach the main tourist spots, but you’ll probably find yourself just hanging around the apartment more than you’d expect. The space is generous in a way that makes you remember how cramped most hotel rooms feel. You can spread out your stuff, cook actual meals if you want, and there’s enough room to just… exist without bumping into your travel companions every five minutes.

What really sold me on the place was how it strikes this balance between having your own space and still getting that Japanese hospitality thing. The hosts are responsive when you need them but don’t hover around making you feel like you’re being watched. Check-in was smooth – they’ll walk you through everything about the building and the neighborhood, which is clutch because navigating apartment buildings in Osaka can be its own adventure. The only thing I’d mention is that being on the fourth floor means you’ll be doing some stair climbing if you’re loaded down with luggage, but honestly, after a few days of walking around Osaka, a few flights of stairs become nothing. The 9.4 rating makes total sense when you experience it – it’s one of those places where someone clearly thought through what travelers actually want versus what they think they want. You get the space and independence of an apartment rental with the reliability and service of a proper accommodation. Perfect for people who want to live in Osaka for a few days instead of just visiting it.

  Big and comfortable house. Netflix is ​​a bonus for the kids to watch cartoons after a tiring walk.

  The property is fully furnished with lots of games for adults and young kids. My 2 primary school children were so occupied with the games that they hardly touched on the phones. Host went extra miles to reimburse our parking charges and solved the problem we created. We are truly grateful and blessed to have found this nice and cosy apartment with extraordinary host

  The host is very helpful and the accommodation is wonderful overall! We arrived on a rainy day and there are even umbrellas prepared for you. The place is very lovely, you can choose if you want western style or Japanese style room. I would definitely book this place again if we ever come back in Osaka. Thank you so much!

  very spacious, big rooms and kitchen. there is almost everything we need, even toys and a keyboard. good location. paid parking 50m away. quiet neighbourhood.
  
  What could be improved: if anything, it’s the water heater. the temperature of hot water is not constant and can be very hot even though the preset is at 40 degrees celcius.
