I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Sunny side house Nishikujo, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place tucked away in this quiet corner of Osaka. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots are exactly what you need, especially when you’re tired of fighting crowds in Dotonbori and just want a decent place to crash that won’t destroy your budget.

The location is actually pretty clever if you think about it. Nishikujo isn’t flashy – it’s one of those residential neighborhoods where actual Osakans live, with narrow streets lined with tiny houses and the occasional convenience store. You’re about a 10-minute walk from Nishikujo Station, which honestly isn’t bad at all since you can hop on the JR loop line and be in the thick of things pretty quickly. I mean, Osaka Station is maybe 15 minutes away, and Universal Studios is practically next door if that’s your thing. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – you can actually sleep without earplugs, which is saying something for this city.

The place itself has that slightly worn-in feel that comes with age, but not in a sketchy way. More like your friend’s apartment where everything works fine but the furniture has stories. The rooms are small, obviously – this is Japan after all – but they’ve managed to squeeze in everything you actually need without making it feel cramped. The bed was surprisingly comfortable, and the AC worked great during those brutal summer months when Osaka turns into a steamy mess. Check-in was smooth enough, though the staff’s English is pretty basic, so having Google Translate handy doesn’t hurt. There’s something refreshing about staying somewhere that caters more to domestic travelers than the international crowd – you get a more authentic slice of how regular Japanese people experience hospitality. The communal areas are nothing fancy, but they’re clean and functional, and I loved that you could grab ice and snacks from the vending machines downstairs at any hour. Parking is tight if you’re driving, but honestly, who drives in Osaka anyway? That 8.3 rating makes perfect sense once you factor in the price point and location – it’s not trying to be a luxury experience, just a solid, reliable place to sleep and shower between your adventures in one of Japan’s most food-obsessed cities.

  The location was in a great place for people wanting a short train ride to Universal Studios. However, the house is very close to other houses and the train station, so you can hear EVERYTHING. The rental company was also very good at responding to messages.
  
  What could be improved: There was NOTHING in the information about the house that there were very STEEP stairs that are really not safe for children. I almost fell down the stairs carrying items up and down the stairs. Also, on the day of arrival, the rental company decided to tell me that the bathroom upstairs wasn't working which was very inconvenient as then you had to travel down those steep stairs in the middle of the night just to go to the bathroom.

  Switchがあったので子どもたちが退屈せず過ごせた。
  大人数だったのでトイレが2個あって良かった。
  清潔感のある部屋だった。
  初日はあいにくの雨だったが、洗濯機と乾燥機があり、洗濯洗剤も置いてくれていたので洗濯でき、快適に過ごせた。
  色々気になるところもあったが、また宿泊したいと友人たちも話していた。
  
  What could be improved: ダイニングテーブルがグラグラで危なかった。
  近くに駅があるため電車の音がうるさかった。
  玄関を開けたらすぐに部屋だったため、外から丸見えが気になった。
  カーテンレールがついていたので布をかけるなり、パーテーションを置くなり、するといいかもしれない。
  階段が急と他の方の口コミにも書かれていたが、そのとおりであぶなかった。
  鍵の置き場所がポストの中だと思っていたため、なかなか鍵が手に入らなかったが、ホストの方に連絡をとりその鍵は予備の鍵だった。

  マリオカートとマリオパーティがあったのでみんなで楽しみました。
  
  What could be improved: シングルベッドと2段ベット、別の部屋にあると思ったらどちらも2階へ上がったところの同じ部屋にありました。別々の部屋にあると思って予約したので残念でした。部屋の間取り図があるといいです。
  
  それから、入り口がわかりづらいです。ENEOSがある通りを入るとゲストハウスの玄関があります。一本手前の通りだと、ゲストハウスの下に住む住人さんのお宅の玄関にたどり着くので注意です。
