Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Sugoroku in Nishinari-ku – honestly, this part of Osaka doesn’t get the tourist love that Dotonbori or Namba gets, but that’s exactly why I ended up loving this place. It sits quietly on a residential street in Kishinosato-Higashi, and while the neighborhood might not win any beauty contests, there’s something refreshingly authentic about staying where actual Osakans live and work.

The hotel itself is this compact, thoughtfully designed spot that feels more like a modern ryokan than your typical business hotel. I mean, they’ve managed to pack serious comfort into a relatively small footprint – my room had this clever Murphy bed setup that actually worked well, and the bathroom was surprisingly spacious (which, if you’ve stayed in Tokyo shoebox hotels, you’ll appreciate). The staff genuinely seemed to care about getting the details right, from the quality of the yukata to making sure the air purifier was running before I checked in. What really sold me though was the location – you’re literally a three-minute walk to Kishinosato Station, which puts you on the Nankai Main Line straight to central Osaka or down to Kansai Airport. But here’s the thing locals know: this area is also walking distance to some incredible hole-in-the-wall kushikatsu places and traditional shops that haven’t been discovered by the Instagram crowd yet.

The morning routine here became one of my favorite parts of the stay, actually. They serve this simple but perfect Japanese breakfast – nothing fancy, just really good rice, miso soup, and pickles that taste like someone’s grandmother made them. You eat it in this tiny common area where you might end up chatting with a salaryman heading to work or another traveler who stumbled onto this gem. The whole vibe is unhurried in a way that’s hard to find in busier parts of the city. Sure, you won’t have a concierge or room service, and the elevator is… well, let’s call it intimate – but the trade-off is staying somewhere that feels genuinely connected to real Osaka life. Plus, with an 8.8 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re doing something right here. If you’re the type who’d rather discover a neighborhood bakery than wait in line at a famous tourist spot, Sugoroku gets it.
