SOUTH EAST INN Overview

You know what caught me off guard about South East Inn? The location is actually perfect if you understand Osaka’s geography. I mean, most people think they need to stay in Namba or Dotonbori to be in the action, but Kitahorie is honestly one of those neighborhoods that locals love – it’s got this creative, slightly artsy vibe without the tourist chaos. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Yotsubashi Station, and from there you can hit anywhere in the city without dealing with the crowds that pile onto trains near the main tourist strips.

The building itself is pretty typical for a 3-star place in Osaka – nothing fancy from the outside, but here’s the thing that impressed me: they actually get the details right. The rooms are small (this is Japan, after all), but everything works properly. The air conditioning doesn’t rattle all night, the wifi is solid, and – this might sound weird but it matters – the bathroom door actually closes properly and the water pressure is decent. I’ve stayed in pricier places where half the stuff was broken or barely functional. The staff speaks enough English to help with basic stuff, though don’t expect full conversations. They’re genuinely helpful though, especially with directions and restaurant recommendations.

What really sells this place for me is the neighborhood itself. Kitahorie has this cool mix of small cafes, vintage shops, and local restaurants that you’d never find if you stayed in the obvious tourist areas. There’s this tiny coffee place called Rokuyosha just around the corner that serves some of the best pour-over coffee I’ve had in Japan – the kind of spot where you’d sit for hours if you weren’t busy exploring. The streets are quieter at night too, which is actually refreshing after spending your days in the sensory overload of central Osaka. You can walk to Amerika-mura (the trendy shopping district) in about ten minutes, or hop on the subway and be in Dotonbori in fifteen minutes when you want that full-on neon and takoyaki experience.

Honestly, the 9.3 rating makes sense when you consider what you’re getting for the price point. It’s not luxury – the lobby is pretty basic and the rooms are definitely compact – but it’s one of those places that just works. Everything is clean, the location is smarter than most tourists realize, and you’re not paying for amenities you probably won’t use anyway. If you’re the type who spends most of your time exploring the city rather than hanging out in your hotel room, this is exactly the kind of place you want as your base.

Reviews of SOUTH EAST INN

  • Rathana from Australia – 28 May 2025 (9/10)

Great space for a family. So many little amenities thought about and provided for. Close to trains, buses, food, shops. Beautifully clean accommodation.

What could be improved: Honestly everything was great but the only thing that could do with a revamp was the comfort of the beds.

  • Yeuk from Australia – 5 May 2025 (10/10)

Location, quiet neighbourhood, great local amenities like playgrounds, supermarkets, restaurants and train stations

  • Simon from United Kingdom – 29 April 2025 (10/10)

A lovely apartment in an excellent location within Osaka. All of the necessary amenities are provided including a washing machine and functional kitchen. Our family of 4 loved staying here and most of the best sites of Osaka (inc Dontobori) are a sensible walking distance away, or otherwise there’s loads of subway stations near by, there are lots of little combinis, bars and places to eat and it’s very close to Orange Street which is great for shopping

What could be improved: Nothing – the Hosts have thought of everything here , and it’s a great area. Very quiet too

  • Inggrid from Australia – 22 April 2025 (10/10)

Lots of food options and convenience stores around the area, and a great little bakery a few doors down.

  • Sebastien from Belgium – 18 April 2025 (9/10)

  • Daniel from Australia – 7 April 2025 (8/10)

Very stylish apartment in a similarly groovy building in a vibrant area of Osaka, a comfortable walk from the city centre attractions.
The young folks staying upstairs sounded like they were moving the furniture around when they got home from a night out ( ; ) but it wasn’t much of a disturbance for long.
Really recommended for families with tweens and teens – ours loved it.
