You know what caught me off guard about Shirakabanoyado Ryogetsu? The name literally means “birch inn – cool moon,” and honestly, it’s way more poetic than you’d expect from a modest 3-star place tucked into Nishi-ku. I stumbled across this ryokan while wandering around the Kujo area – it’s in this quiet residential pocket that most tourists completely miss, about a 10-minute walk from Kujo Station if you know which way to go.

The thing is, this isn’t your typical Osaka experience. While everyone’s cramming into Dotonbori or hitting up the castle, you’re here in what feels like a completely different city. The streets around Kujominami are lined with these small family-run shops and the kind of local restaurants where the menu’s only in Japanese and the owner remembers your order after two visits. The ryokan itself has this understated traditional vibe – think clean tatami floors, sliding doors that actually work properly, and that particular smell of quality wood and incense that good Japanese inns have. The staff here really know their stuff too, which makes sense given that 8.6 rating. They’re not just going through the motions.

What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole ryokan experience without making it feel like dinner theater for foreigners. The rooms are properly traditional but they’ve added just enough modern touches (decent Wi-Fi, updated bathrooms) that you’re not roughing it. The futon bedding is actually comfortable – I mean, I’ve stayed at places where you’re basically sleeping on the floor with a thin blanket, but they’ve invested in proper mattresses here. And the location, well, it’s perfect if you want to experience residential Osaka. You’re close enough to walk to the Hanshin Expressway area where there are some incredible hole-in-the-wall yakitori places, but far enough from the main tourist zones that you can actually hear yourself think. The morning routine here is lovely too – they serve a proper Japanese breakfast that changes based on what’s seasonal, and you can sit there planning your day while watching the neighborhood wake up. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night just because leaving feels like too much effort.

  We really enjoyed our time there. Perfect for a family but lots of going up/down stairs so it could be challenging if have mobility issues.

  The space is good for 4-6 people. The 3 stories house is equipped with all necessary facilities. We’ve use the kitchen for our meals and it’s good to have a real experience using Japanese style kitchen.
  
  What could be improved: Surprisingly they’ve failed to clean the air vent in bathroom and kitchen, big disappointment. Property owner only communicate in Japanese which might be quite a challenge for oversea tourist (have to use google translate).

  We stay there for 5 days and the owner didn’t wants clean in the middle or change towels (he actually told me wash the towels by my self..)

  USJに行く予定だったので、ロケーションもとても近くて駐車場もあってよかった。コンビニも徒歩すぐでとっても便利。設備が新しい感じで好感度高い。
  
  What could be improved: 清掃が少し気になりました。お皿やお鍋に前回使ったであろう痕跡が見受けられたり、ドライヤーの位置が不自然だったり、引き出しの中に髪の毛が残っていたり。まぁ人気の物件だし、キッチンの道具が揃っている分自炊するし、その後の片付けをどこまでお客さんがして、どこまでそれを見直しているのかなと疑問に思いました。

  USJも近いし、新大阪駅からも近くでした。
  清潔感もありました。
  洗濯機も利用させていただき、とても助かりました。
  ホテルだと行った時に洗濯機が空いてなかったり、終わり時間に取りに行かないとだし、面倒なので。
  また利用したいです。
  
  What could be improved: 虫が出たのですが、殺虫剤がなかったのかどこにあるのかわからなかったので、逃げてしまい、子供達が怯えていたので、夏はあった方がいいかなと思いました。

  チェックイン時は、冷房を入れておいてくれて快適でしたし、明かりもついていたので、安心感があった。
  とても綺麗だったし、タオル＆バスタオルが人数分あって助かった。駐車場も目の前にあり、無料だったのは決め手。USJへ行くのに西九条駅まで歩きましたが、思ったより近くて便利だった。観光に忙しくて、宿泊所でのんびりできなかったので、また機会があったらゆっくり過ごしたい。とても快適でした。
  
  What could be improved: 近くにスーパーがある、と記載があったが見つけられなかったのが、非常に残念でした。お箸や食器類があって助かりましたが、マグカップもあればなお良かったです。
