Hotel Description
So I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Hotel Oriental Express in Shinsaibashi, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming spots end up surprising you the most. This little gem sits right on Minamisemba, which honestly puts you in one of the best positions in all of Osaka if you actually want to experience the city like a local.
The thing about this hotel is that it gets the fundamentals right without trying to be something it’s not. The lobby’s clean and efficient – nothing fancy, but the staff actually seems to care about helping you figure out the neighborhood. And speaking of the neighborhood, you’re literally a 3-minute walk from the main Shinsaibashi shopping strip, but far enough down Minamisemba that you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos every time you step outside. I mean, you can still hear the energy from the main drag, but it’s more like a gentle hum than the full-on sensory overload you get right on Shinsaibashi-suji. The rooms are… well, they’re Japanese hotel rooms, so don’t expect sprawling American-style spaces. But everything’s thoughtfully designed – good lighting for getting ready, decent Wi-Fi that actually works, and surprisingly comfortable beds. What really got me was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re in the heart of everything. They’ve got solid windows that block out most of the street noise, which is clutch when you’re trying to recover from a night exploring Dotonbori (which, by the way, is literally a 7-minute walk south).
Here’s what I wish someone had told me before I booked: the elevator’s tiny and sometimes slow during busy periods, but honestly, it’s kind of charming in that very Japanese way where efficiency meets compact design. Also, if you’re planning to do serious shopping, there’s a Family Mart right around the corner that’s open 24/7 – perfect for those late-night snack runs or picking up forgotten essentials. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, but that’s actually a blessing because you’re surrounded by incredible local spots. There’s this little ramen joint two blocks over that I stumbled into around 11 PM – the kind of place with no English menu but where the owner somehow communicates through gestures and enthusiasm. That’s the real Osaka experience right there. The 8.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve stayed here because it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. It’s clean, well-located, and the staff genuinely wants to help you navigate the city. Plus, you’re paying for the location and reliability, not marble bathrooms or rooftop bars – and sometimes that’s exactly what you need when you want to spend your time and money exploring one of Japan’s most incredible food cities instead of hanging around your hotel.

Close to transportation and main shopping mall.
What could be improved: Bed was not that comfortableSabrina from Australia – 2 June 2025 (9/10)
The hotel offered extras like soft drinks, soup and coffee free of charge from 10am to 10pm.
The location, I initially thought was not good, but after the first day I realized was very close to train station, many shops and restaurants and 10 min walking distance to Dontonbori.
Would recommend and come back to this hotel if returning to Osaka
What could be improved: The pillows were not good, but got different ones from reception with no problemsMichelle from United Kingdom – 27 May 2025 (8/10)
The location is perfect, we didn’t even take the subway, everything is walking distance
What could be improved: We had to pay an extra 400¥ upon arrival for my friend that I wasn’t aware of, even though my booking was for two people. It’s not expensive but just include it in the booking..?Tine from Australia – 23 May 2025 (9/10)
It was conveniently located not far from the metro and very efficient check and check out. The staff were very helpful.
What could be improved: Nothing other than the pillows which were very hard, , but we have experienced the same at different hotels, so maybe it is how pillows are here.Timothy from United States – 16 May 2025 (9/10)
The staff is fantastic and helped us a lot. The room was great, albeit small. It was quiet, comfortable, and we slept well. The breakfasts were very good with a wide variety of food.
What could be improved: A bit more room to empty bags and put away clothes would be great, but we managed fine.Peng-wei from Taiwan – 7 May 2025 (9/10)
The staff are friendly to kids.
