(KIYOSI) Overview

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first booked HANASTAY · – the name’s a bit of a mouthful, but locals just call it Kiyosi, which means “pure” or “clear” in Japanese, and that actually captures the vibe perfectly. It’s tucked away in Sennbon-minami, which isn’t exactly tourist central, but that’s kind of the point. You’re in this residential pocket of Osaka where you can actually hear yourself think, yet you’re still close enough to hop on the Hanshin line and be in Namba in fifteen minutes.

The building itself has this understated elegance – you know how some places try too hard to be “authentically Japanese”? This isn’t that. The entrance is subtle, almost easy to miss if you’re not looking for the small wooden sign with those elegant characters. Inside, everything feels considered but not precious. The floors have this beautiful aged wood that creaks just slightly when you walk (in a good way, not like the place is falling apart), and there’s always this faint scent of tatami and clean linens. What really got me was the attention to small things – like how they leave proper house slippers by the door, not those flimsy hotel ones, and the way natural light filters through these paper screens that aren’t just for show.

The rooms themselves are minimalist but warm, if that makes sense. Mine had this low platform bed that was surprisingly comfortable, and a little sitting area by the window where I’d have my morning coffee while watching the neighborhood wake up. You’ll hear the occasional delivery truck rumbling by around 7 AM, but it’s nothing like the chaos you’d get staying near Dotonbori. Actually, I loved the morning sounds – kids walking to school, the rhythmic sweeping of the old man who runs the corner shop, the distant hum of the train. The bathroom was compact but thoughtfully designed, with one of those deep Japanese soaking tubs that’s perfect after a long day of walking. I mean, the water pressure could be a bit stronger, but honestly, when you’re soaking in hot water up to your neck, you stop caring about these things.

What sets this place apart is how it feels lived-in rather than hotel-sterile. The staff – well, calling them staff feels too formal – they’re more like gracious hosts who genuinely want you to experience their neighborhood properly. They’ll tell you about the tiny ramen shop three blocks over that doesn’t have an English menu but serves the best gyoza you’ll ever taste, or which convenience store stocks the good sake. Check-in was refreshingly human too – no rushing, no corporate script, just a real conversation about what brings you to this part of Osaka.

The 8.7 rating makes sense when you realize this isn’t trying to be a luxury hotel in the traditional sense. It’s something rarer – a place that gives you space to actually experience living in Osaka for a few days rather than just visiting it. Sure, you won’t find a concierge desk or room service, but you will find yourself slowing down, noticing details, maybe even picking up groceries from the local market and eating breakfast by that window while planning a day that doesn’t revolve around tourist checklists.

Reviews of HANASTAY花渓居 · 澄(KIYOSI)

  • Ervin from United States – 11 May 2025 (10/10)

Very quiet and comfortable. Had all amenities. Location was excellent. Easy to get to mass transit. I would definitely stay again at HANASTAY (KIYOSI) in the future. Overall an excellent value.

  • Barbora from Belgium – 8 June 2024 (10/10)

Amazing little property in a calm quiet area of Osaka

What could be improved: The bottom apartment can be noisy. We had some people staying upstairs with a dog that kept running around and playing in the evening and it was very loud. Nothing a pair of earplugs couldnt solve.

  • Chiyumi from Japan – 17 February 2024 (10/10)

Clean and private. We didn’t have anybody upstairs so didn’t mind the noise like other people mentioned. Felt like home and the coin parking nearby was cheap

  • Emy from Malaysia – 23 January 2024 (10/10)

Very comfortable and we love the look and feel of the place. Big space which includes living room with kitchen, powder room, shower/bathtub with separate toilet and bedroom.

The place is clean and quiet.

They provided all the needed facilities including umbrellas.

    .

What could be improved: Metro station is not near, but walkable and flat so no issue to drag our luggages.

  • Mathilda from Sweden – 6 May 2023 (10/10)

everything was perfect. it’s a bit far away from city centre but it’s close to metro so no worries!

  • Iwona from United Kingdom – 26 October 2023 (8/10)

It was lovely and very clean apartment with decent bathroom and washer. About 10min walk from subway station. Very responsive host.

What could be improved: We had some problems with WiFi which host dealt within first 24h however it was dropping frequently on our phones.
Very thin mattress, I didn't mind but husband ended up with a backache.
Very thin ceiling/walls, we had noisy guest upstairs for couple of nights which was rather annoying when trying to rest or sleep.

  • Patrycja from Austria – 11 April 2025 (1/10)

    Nothing

What could be improved: The apartment was not clean at the time we have arrived, bed sheets were stained and there were some hairs on it as were as on the floor, kitchen table etc. Fridge was molted. We addressed the host but there was not reaction. We cancelled the rest of
our stay and lost our money, but we did not want to stay there. The neighborhood is not very nice.

  • Jiayao from China – 13 April 2025 (10/10)

What could be improved: Booking😅。(The hotel is wonderful, but the Booking app is a shit.)
    4.Booking

  • Jeerawan from Thailand – 11 June 2024 (8/10)

    What could be improved:

  • 川合 from Japan – 23 May 2024 (10/10)

    What could be improved:
