back alley residence Hibi Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked down that narrow street in Tenjinbashi looking for back alley residence Hibi, I thought I’d gotten the address wrong. The entrance is tucked away in what feels like a residential pocket, nothing flashy about it, just this quiet little building that you could easily miss if you weren’t paying attention. But that’s actually part of its charm, you know? It’s like discovering a secret that only locals seem to know about.
The whole area around Tenjinbashi 3-chome is this perfect mix of old Osaka and everyday life – there’s the famous Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street just a few minutes away (seriously, it’s the longest shopping arcade in Japan, though most tourists somehow miss this part of it), but where Hibi sits feels more like where people actually live. I mean, you’ve got tiny ramen shops, a convenience store that locals clearly frequent, and these little alleyways that smell like home cooking in the evenings. The hotel itself reflects this vibe – it’s not trying to be anything fancy, just comfortable and genuine. The rooms are small but thoughtfully designed, sort of like a well-organized Tokyo apartment, and honestly, the cleanliness level is what you’d expect from a place with a 9.1 rating. What surprised me was how quiet it gets at night, despite being in the middle of the city. I guess being tucked away in that residential area really does shield you from the main street noise.
What really sets this place apart is the staff’s approach – they’re not doing the over-the-top hospitality thing, but they know their neighborhood inside and out. The person at the front desk (who spoke better English than my terrible Japanese, thankfully) gave me directions to this incredible takoyaki place that I never would have found otherwise, just two blocks away down an alley that doesn’t even have a proper street sign. It’s these little touches that make you realize why this place has such a high rating despite being a modest three-star property. You’re staying in a real part of Osaka here, not some tourist bubble. The Tenjinbashi-suji shopping street is your playground, but you can also just wander the residential streets and stumble across neighborhood temples and tiny shops that have been there for decades. Just keep in mind that this isn’t the kind of place where you’ll have a concierge or room service – it’s more like crashing at a really well-run guesthouse where everything works perfectly and you feel like you’re getting an authentic slice of the city.

Very comfortable with all necessary facilities. Nice bathroom, aircon in bedrooms. It was great to be able to do our washing in the middle of our trip 😀 location was great, stations five minutes away and a market on our doorstep with some delicious food.
What could be improved: We couldn’t find an iron, it would be a nice touch. But that’s just a detail, we loved the place!Daniela from Australia – 26 April 2025 (9/10)
We loved the traditional property and the location was just great.

Great for travelling with adult familyKatie from Australia – 25 June 2024 (9/10)
Funky neighbourhood and spacious, tastefully furnished apartment with tatami mat bedrooms and all you need for a lovely Osaka stay
Suzana from Australia – 31 May 2024 (9/10)
Location was perfect, close to 2 stations, lots of restaurants and shopping. Spoilt for choice. House was big and great having a washer/dryer. Owner was very responsive on queries we had. Amazing japanese house for 2 adults and 2 teens.
What could be improved: Stairs were a little narrow and extra pillows would have been nice. Otherwise perfect.Rachael from United Kingdom – 21 April 2024 (9/10)
Location was fantastic and great to have space to relax, a clothes washing machine & cooking facilities helped a lot
What could be improved: We liked it all – but a smart tv would be great so we could stream our own movies. A toaster in the kitchen too would be welcome.Emma from Australia – 27 November 2023 (9/10)
While the location was a bit tricky to find at first, it was private while being very close to train stations. The house was very spacious and had everything you could want. We didn't really use the kitchen but it would have been very handy if we'd been staying longer.
What could be improved: Very minor things that didn't impact our stay at all. The stairs are very steep so for other guests planning to use all of the bedrooms, it's worth being prepared.Jeova from Japan – 22 February 2023 (9/10)
Really nice house, located in a very convenient place.
Calvin from United States – 2 October 2024 (9/10)
Really excellent and convenient location, very cool, old fashioned Japanese home with good modern amenities like AC, washer/dryer, and a small kitchen. Lots of rooms, so easy to spread out if you're in a group.
What could be improved: It IS an older home, with the good and bad that come with it. There is a lot of charm, but some parts of the house look a little tired. The tatami and floors can also be a little firm, but my group slept just fine.
