You know what struck me first about the ANA Crowne Plaza? The lobby doesn’t try too hard to impress you with marble and gold – it’s actually refreshing. Located right in Dojimahama, you’re basically in the heart of Osaka’s business district, which sounds boring until you realize you can walk to Osaka Station in about ten minutes and hit the underground shopping areas without dealing with the usual tourist crowds in Dotonbori.

The rooms are, well, exactly what you’d expect from a solid international chain – clean, comfortable, with those big windows that actually open (rare in Japan, honestly). I mean, it’s not going to blow your mind, but the beds are proper comfortable and the bathrooms have decent water pressure, which matters more than you think after walking around Osaka all day. The 7.3 rating makes sense because it does what it’s supposed to do without any major surprises, good or bad. Some rooms on higher floors give you glimpses of Osaka Castle if you crane your neck – not exactly a castle view, but hey, it’s something. The AC works well too, which you’ll appreciate during those humid summer months when Osaka feels like a sauna.

What I actually loved about staying here was the location intelligence – you’re close enough to the Tosabori River that morning walks are pleasant, and Nakanoshima Park is literally across the water. The staff speaks solid English (this is IHG after all), and they genuinely seem to know the area well. I asked about a good tempura place that wasn’t touristy, and the concierge directed me to this tiny spot in a nearby office building basement that I never would’ve found otherwise. The hotel restaurant is fine but honestly, with all the incredible food within walking distance, why would you eat there? There’s a convenience store right outside, and if you walk five minutes toward the river, you’ll find some serious local izakayas that fill up with office workers after 6 PM. Check-in was smooth, parking is available but pricey (typical for central Osaka), and the elevators are fast enough that you won’t be standing around forever. It’s the kind of place where business travelers feel at home, but it works perfectly well for tourists who want a reliable base without paying Ritz-Carlton prices. Not the most exciting hotel in the world, but sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

  What could be improved: We were upgraded to club level but the lounge staff told us that we are not allowed to use the lounge. This does not make any sense. Staying in a club room but not allowed to use club lounge? What type of service is this? We did not ask for the upgrade…why did you upgrade us then? If you upgrade us, you should give us same benefits as all club level guests.
