民泊 古 Overview

You know what struck me first about ? The name literally means “old guesthouse,” and honestly, they’re not trying to be anything they’re not. This little three-star place sits right in Shimodera, which is one of those Osaka neighborhoods that feels authentically local without being touristy at all. I mean, you’re in Naniwa-ku here – not exactly the flashy Dotonbori area everyone posts about on Instagram, but that’s actually what makes it interesting.

The building itself has this lived-in character that you either love or find a bit rough around the edges. It’s got that slightly worn tatami smell mixed with something like old wood polish when you first walk in. The 7.2 rating makes sense because it’s not trying to compete with the big hotel chains, but if you’re the type who appreciates staying somewhere with actual personality, you’ll get it. The rooms are clean and functional – think more “staying at your Japanese friend’s family place” than “luxury accommodation.” The futons are surprisingly comfortable though, and there’s something satisfying about the morning ritual of folding everything away.

What I really appreciated was how the owner (who speaks decent English, by the way) actually knows the neighborhood. They’ll tell you that the little ramen shop two blocks down stays open until 2 AM and serves the best gyoza in the area, or that there’s a public bath house about a ten-minute walk away that locals have been using for decades. You’re also really close to Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine – like, you can walk there in about fifteen minutes instead of dealing with the tourist crowds that bus in from other parts of the city. The Nankai line is right there too, so getting to Namba or even down to Wakayama is pretty straightforward if you want to do day trips. Parking is tight (this is Osaka, after all), but there’s a small lot nearby if you’re brave enough to drive in the city. Honestly though, you won’t need a car from here – the train connections are solid, and half the charm is just wandering around this part of town on foot. It gets quiet at night in a way that central Osaka definitely doesn’t, which means you’ll actually sleep well. Just don’t expect room service or a concierge desk – this is more about experiencing how regular people live in Osaka, not being pampered.

Reviews of 民泊 古

  • Léoni from Netherlands – 24 March 2025 (8/10)

Good location; outside the centre but close to public transportation. Easy check-in (and -out) Efficient space; If you are ok with a small space, it’s a good place to stay. Great value for money.

    What could be improved: –

  • Jake from Australia – 16 March 2025 (6/10)

This property was in great vicinity to everything in Osaka and value for money in comparison

What could be improved: That bedding was uncomfortable and it can be quite loud in other rooms

  • Archer from Australia – 15 December 2024 (7/10)

This property is exactly what you expect for the price. Good location and set up with enough facilities to get by. Easy to check in and out by yourself

What could be improved: The bed was quite uncomfortable and would be better with some extra pillows for some back support

  • Karolina from Portugal – 12 December 2024 (7/10)

Lociation, value for money, good wi-fi

What could be improved: No staff present, it’s self service from the check-in until check-out. But the system is very efficient, you get a code to your room on the day you check in with all the instructions. No cups in the room, you have a kettle but no way to prepare a coffee for example.

  • Matthew from Singapore – 18 November 2024 (8/10)

It’s located near Den – Den electric town , Tsūtenkaku – Hitachi Tower , Nipponbashi, Dotonburi

What could be improved: Walls are a little thin

  • Ian from Philippines – 10 November 2024 (8/10)

It is very near ebisucho metro station

What could be improved: No heating. The walla are thin, i can hear the other rooms

  • Yeo from Singapore – 24 August 2024 (8/10)

The location and facilities weren't too far from nearby stations and conscience storss

What could be improved: The size of the restroom but it's understandable at its given price point.

  • Emily from Australia – 3 July 2024 (8/10)

What could be improved: The other guests didn’t abide by the “be quiet” rule. I was woken up a few times by someone I can only describe as a “serial stomper”

  • Annatasha from Malaysia – 24 April 2024 (6/10)

They allowed to store luggages on the day of check in and out. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a heated AC.

What could be improved: I had to carry my big luggage all the way up to the 4th floor. Rooms were incredibly small for 2 – no space to walk between beds

  • Steve from Philippines – 13 April 2024 (8/10)

cheap and affordable, the room is clean. complete toiletries are provided.

What could be improved: far from train stations, narrow stairs, hard to climb up if you have big and multiple luggages.
